All That Heaven Allows ★★★★★

Of the romantic melodramas I've seen, doubtless this is the best. A tad dated, yes, but obviously transgressive for its time. I'm surprised there aren't more films like these being produced today.

It also looks gorgeous. I watched that blu-ray by the Criterion Collection on a new HD TV—I coulda swore Paul Thomas Anderson had successfully recreated a film from the 1950s. Incredible color and lighting. Unexpectedly, it's a feast for the eyes of a Mario Bava fan.
