    I love everything about this. I may need to do a rewatch because after the first viewing I feel like there's some emotional piece that didn't quite get through, it feels a little rushed, like I should get more time with these women.

    A movie about an unlikable woman that doesn't lean so heavily into the cliches (probably because it's based on a true story). You are not going to like her all that much more by the end of the movie, she's not a particularly good or nice person, but you really get to know her and you get to see her particular weird brand of friendship.

    It is terrifying to see an adaptation of a book like ANNIHILATION. Ultimately I don't know that people who read it will enjoy it very much, at least I didn't. That doesn't mean it's bad, but the things about the book that were most vivid to me--the disorienting feel of it, the almost dreamy tone, the final setpiece--were not there and it felt like something almost entirely different. Those were the things I'd gone for, I didn't get them.

    Spielberg's gonna Spielberg. Meryl is great, but there's not much there for anyone else to chew on. Not much to really feel, not many emotional notes outside Graham's story arc. Too inspirational, not as in the weeds. Spotlight was clearly better. And yet I liked it more than I expected to.
