    When I realized this was a Leigh Whannell movie it all clicked into place. On the one hand, there is so much to roll your eyes at and basically all of that falls on him. The first act is so boring and predictable most people would consider just leaving. But, because it's a Leigh Whannell movie, there's enough smart little things and a pile of twists that reward you sticking around.

    It is terrifying to see an adaptation of a book like ANNIHILATION. Ultimately I don't know that people who read it will enjoy it very much, at least I didn't. That doesn't mean it's bad, but the things about the book that were most vivid to me--the disorienting feel of it, the almost dreamy tone, the final setpiece--were not there and it felt like something almost entirely different. Those were the things I'd gone for, I didn't get them.

    Spielberg's gonna Spielberg. Meryl is great, but there's not much there for anyone else to chew on. Not much to really feel, not many emotional notes outside Graham's story arc. Too inspirational, not as in the weeds. Spotlight was clearly better. And yet I liked it more than I expected to.
