Well, I’d been looking forward to this for some time now and I have to say I was a little let down. It looks amazing for sure. Even with the weird aspect ratio which I’m not a great fan of, the black and white photography is absolutely stunning. It’s so textured from the faces of our two leads to the landscapes, it sets a mood for sure. The performances from Defoe and Pattinson are solid too, I especially loved Defoe’s accent, which must have needed subtitles for American viewers.

There are some great scenes here and there in the film too. The mermaid and her vagina were interesting. I really loved the shot of a naked Defoe with lights shining from his eyes and the seagulls murder is worth the price of admission alone. But between these scenes is just a lot of rather dull chatter between the two characters. I’d have really liked to have seen the delve into madness be a little deeper than it is.
