The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog ★★★★½

Reminiscent of There Will Be Blood in the best ways. The mischievous Jonny Greenwood score and flashy central performance, certainly, but more pointedly in how every storytelling decision—textual, cinematographic, editorial, or otherwise—cuts against convention. This could have been a formulaic Hollywood picture, but Campion knows better. I also love Wegner's photography: one of the rare digitally shot films that offers incredible texture and tonal gradation in its images, all the more admirable given the restricted palette.
