    Orphan: First Kill

    ★★½

Orphan: First Kill is a prequel to the 2009 creepy kid horror/thriller Orphan which I pretty much enjoyed as a movie of its sub-genre. It got a real kick from a bonkers (if not totally convincing) reveal. Spoiler alert for the original: the little girl that ten year old Isabella Fuhrman was playing was actually an adult grifter with dwarfism.

This prequel brings back a now actual adult Fuhrman playing her younger self (as the con-artist adult). It tells the…

Inside the Mind of a Cat

    ★★★

I think the Inside of the Mind of a Cat is a scattering of loose change, a couple of raggedy mice toys, a stray laser pointer, and a cow bell that clangs randomly. But this Netflix documentary wants to explore it deeper using "cutting-edge" new scientific research.

I've been thinking about revisiting E.T. for the past year and the gods of Hollywood have bestowed it upon us in a theatrical re-release for one week. Now, I most definitely saw E.T. upon its original release back in (*gulp*) 1982, but certainly not on IMAX (or LIMAX, in my theater’s case). Also appreciated it wasn't the print with the walkie talkies... I guess they gave up on that edition (though I think there was still some of CGI additions…

    Prey

    ★★★★½

It's a damn shame that the Predator franchise got ran into the ground with middling theatrical releases while this excellent sequel gets relegated to streaming. But that's where we are... Prey released on Hulu and manages to easily be the second best in the franchise. There's no reason this couldn't have been theatrical... other than audience disinterest after being burned so many times.

Prey borrows the premise from the original film but flips it. Instead of advanced '80s superheroes, the…
