Ponyo ★★★★½

Honestly I think Miyazaki could've done more to explore the bone-chilling implications of the line, “Maybe she could use some of her magic to fix my hips and back” - something an elderly woman thought it appropriate to say to a preschool-age boy after he’s mentioned that a goldfish licked his thumb and healed his wound. The mental body horror image of poor baby Ponyo being made to place her tongue so perilously close to the saggy nude flesh of this woman’s gluteal zone is something that I’m afraid will occupy some serious acreage in my deathbed, life-flashing-before-my-eyes montage. The song slaps though.
