A film that demonstrates the true greatness that cinema can achieve. Though it has flaws, they are few and far between. Joaquin Phoenix’s descent into madness is one of the best performances I have seen in any film. His twisted and fearful nature is so powerfully portrayed. The rest of the cast did stellar work as well, yet the other thing that I feel elevates this film to true greatness is its incredible set pieces/costuming/overall representation of history. There was no shortcut taken to recreate what we believe to be the norm back in Roman times, and the crew behind that deserves the highest of praise, magna laude! This film is not one to skip, just be prepared for a long run time and carve out the time to give it a chance. You might also believe in a dream that was Rome, if you do.
