Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

Probably on the upper-end of a 7/10. Still feels too much like a play sometimes, but out of the play-to-screen adaptations (One Night in Miami, The Father) I've watched in 2020, this felt the most cinematic. Some great costume design, make-up... all the performances were on point. Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman are excellent especially, and while I'm not the biggest fan of this theatrical type of acting, they deserve all the awards hype they're getting.

I think my biggest problem lies in the fact that it's so contained. Sometimes I felt like I didn't know where the film was going, and... yeah I know it's from a play, but as amazing as the monologues were, they really put a halt to the story. I'm sure the play is just like this, but maybe I'm just not a huge fan of this purposefully theatrical presentation sometimes. Still, I had a lot of fun with this, and the ending hits hard for sure.
