Bonus day at Cannes since our three-day passes got extended. I was originally gonna end up missing this one but I'm so glad I got to see this.
Joachim Trier pretty much remade Baumbach's Frances Ha but just made it better. It no longer feels like some first-world-problems type of bullshit.
Julie feels human. While deeply flawed, each chapter shows us different segments of her life and we get to understand why she makes certain decisions in the film. Gone are the scenes of a woman screaming "I'm so broke!!!" mysteriously having enough money to buy a last-minute ticket to Paris. The film shows the consequences of Julie cheating on her partner, for example, and we see the pain she causes for her partners. There is a break-up scene in the middle of the film that just feels so raw and intimate. Like it was genuinely uncomfortable how real it seemed. And holy shit, the last two chapters were seriously sad.
