Jimmy Champane’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ve been a huge fan of the original since I watched it on my iPod video in 10th grade and I went into this new version with high expectations.
There’s so much to love here from the performances, to the Oscar-worthy lighting & composition to the incredible gore & body-horror moments… but it all feels weirdly hollow.
The script is so laser-focused on its social commentary that it lets characters and the main plot fall by the wayside and it’s frustrating because EVERYTHING else is so good.
This is definitely the best Candyman sequel but that’s not really saying much and I’m really curious if an extended cut could even it back out.
