Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy ★★★½

As is often the case these days, this is suffering from feverish overpraise. Mere days after its release I've already seen multiple people call it this generation's Star Wars, which, like, can we wait a little bit before we put it in the same league as one of the most iconic films of all time? There's nothing wrong with being solid, which is exactly what this film is. Despite having a talking raccoon and tree creature play prominent roles, this is a pretty familiar underdog tale. However, it sets itself apart thanks to a strong sense of world-building, a game cast and director James Gunn bringing a playful, referential sense of humor that's welcome in the often solemn superhero genre. It has to be intentional that Vin Diesel's Groot gets a heroic, three-syllable line heavily reminiscent of his one in The Iron Giant, right?
