James Haves’s review published on Letterboxd:
Should I hate this movie? Yeah, yeah I really fucking should. The comedy is obnoxious, the cheesiness is sickening, the twee happiness that everyone exudes should make me want to punch them in their fucking faces.
But hell, I can't lie, I love Mamma Mia!.
Pierce Brosnan sounds like a dead horse. Meryl Streep is massively overacting. Amanda Seyfried barley has a god damn character, and that's not even mentioning her boyfriend.
But it doesn't matter because it's just so much fun. It makes me feel happy and warm and it's such a comforting movie and I just want to hug it. ABBA are awesome, and the writers of the story built it around the songs so they never feel jammed in for the sake of it. They feel like they could be written for the musical!
It sucks, by all accounts, but I don't care. I love it and I always will.
