Dopey and fun. I needed to watch something less serious!!

Eastern Promises 2007
I have to minus at least one star for the Russian-accented voiceover, in English, of Tatiana’s diary entries, accompanied by sad violins. Too much of this film is preposterous and yet, AND YET, sorry but I still find it somehow compelling. The spark between Anna and the sinister mafia henchman is an unnecessary thread but like, I see the appeal and Viggo Mortensen isn't even my type, so okay.

Walking and Talking 1996
I saw this in the cinema when it came out and somehow, even though nobody seems to have heard of it, it stuck with me forever. I remember writing an essay about it at uni! The cast, most of all Catherine Keener, just blew me away; I found it such an authentic portrayal of friendships and relationships and loneliness and communication problems. There are all these small understated moments that enhance our understandings of people or add humour to the situation.

The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief 2006
My number one favourite documentary. As soon as you've wrapped your head around what it's showing you, it unlocks another level.
Some find it depressing. I don't. But in all those neverending drunken nights, I see a relatable yearning.
