There's so much more to 2001 than visuals. Beneath the technical marvels and fun-to-discuss predictions of a year by now long past is an odyssey of human progress. 2001 is a celebration of humanity, possibly moreso than any other humanist work in cinema. Rather than indulging science fiction's nasty habit of ridiculing our mistakes, 2001 is proud of us. It's proud of where we came from, where we've ended up, and it's wondering where we will go with bated anticipation. For all our many, many, shortcomings we've accomplished so much, and we're not done yet. There's ground left to be walked on, planets to discover, and hidden potential we haven't unlocked. In Kubrick's eyes, this is just the beginning, and I think he's right.
