Sardar Udham

Sardar Udham ★★★★½

I don't think there's been an Indian film about the freedom struggle that has been made with such honesty before. There have been films that are better in a cinematic way, there are films that are much more historically accurate (maybe?) but as honest as this one without relying on too many gimmicks is very rare for Indian cinema. The production design, the cinematography, the acting including the international cast everything has been made perfectly and Shoojit Sircar once again shows why he's considered as one of the best working directors in Bollywood. The details in the film, the changes made from the history for the narrative, the non linear structure, inclusion of Bhagat Singh, his Socialist party, the various political ideologies and the parallels to the current world, there's a lot that could be analysed in this film. One of the best films of the year.
