In what was probably the first horror sequel (and considering that one more would follow this, probably the first trilogy) in the history of the motion picture, Uncle Josh in a Spooky Hotel also marks director Edwin S. Porter's second outing with his comically oblivious character, Uncle Josh.
It's the exaggerated obliviousness of Uncle Josh that really carries this film, too, as paranormal happenings go on around him and he is none the wiser. Unfortunately, it feels rather lacklustre in all other departments though, suffering from the same 'late to the party' pitfalls that beleaguered early American and British cinema when compared to their European cousins.
VERDICT; Uncle Josh in a Spooky Hotel doesn't really do anything new, even this early in the history of cinema. Uncle Josh is a likeable enough character, however, and the film does have some laughs - even if they are at his expense.
