So I was flicking through Netflix, as you do; casually looking for films to occupy the day when you’re a university student with the entire day off, and being too much of a lazy ass to actually do any work. I decided to go for something in the TV section, but instead of catching up on Breaking Bad or Dexter like I should, I opted for a documentary on Yellowstone.
Simply titled Yellowstone, this BBC production is split into three separate parts – one charting winter, then summer, and finally autumn. British actor Peter Firth narrates, and works well enough since he has one of those compelling made-for-documentary voices like David Attenborough. The script is good as well; captivating but with enough factual information on offer too.
Visually the film is wonderful, with fantastic shots aplenty of one of the most naturally beautiful areas on the entire Earth. This episode is especially impressive with the snow-covered, ‘Winter Wonderland’ that the national park is transformed into during this season. Most of the show is just different types of animals wandering about, but by God if it isn’t enthralling. Couple that with the aforementioned visual beauty, and you’ve got one hell of a documentary series. It also features a sneaky little bastard of a coyote, too.
VERDICT; I guess it depends if your into this sort of thing or not, like all wildlife documentaries. Things like this always fascinate me – there’s no bells or whistles; just nature at its simplest and most humbling. An absorbing and thoroughly engrossing look at a truly marvellous place. Bring on the summer.
