Kept being intrigued by how artsy this movie's approach to violence was, until I realized afterwards that Lynne Ramsay directed it.
The plot is pretty boiler-plate 'man with haunted past saves innocent child' (think Taken but with more PTSD). But it's still presented in an interesting enough way that's a worthwhile watch. Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic, and the whole film is scored like a horror movie, which I found really effective.
The movie is less about what happens to the characters, and more about capturing the smallest of details along the way. A strange, but engrossing flick.
Oh hey a comedy with actual scripted, non-improv-based jokes. Been awhile since I seen one of those 'round these parts...
Hilarious, and the premise of satirizing a fascist regime couldn't have come at a more perfect time. The darker tone at the very end also works surprisingly well.
Accents were a bit confusing though. Seemed like they couldn't decide between American, English, or Russian.
A pretentious review for a pretentious movie:
Call Me By Your Name. Call Me By Your Unnecessary Scenes. Call Me By Your Character Inconsistency. Call Me By Your Pacing Issues. Call Me By Your Director Who Wanted A Vacation To Italy. Call Me By Your Statutory Rape. Call Me By Your Peach Fucking.
It's like an alien watched a bunch of Godard movies and 30 episodes of the West Wing and said yeah, I understand how humans interact now!
