The ethos of the film is that mental illness cannot be explained or rationalised. The film simultaneously spends every waking second explaining and rationalising the character’s mental illness. You can fuck right off.

The sheer scope of main character syndrome that ultimately goes unaddressed is vile. I was concerned about Hugh Jackman being the lead in a story about teen depression as is but I didn’t expect his character to be this reprehensible.

Nobody seems to have told Zen McGrath…

Has anyone ever won best director and worst director for consecutive films? I’m not the biggest Revenant fan but the fall off to get to here is extreme.

People accuse Sorrentino of being a subsidiary  of Fellini and I empathise with that even if I like his films. Somehow Bardo doesn’t feel Felliniesque, it feels like a pastiche of Sorrentino’s pastiche. Good work Inarritu you’ve successfully been derivative across two different millenniums 🤦‍♂️

It also (particularly towards the end) evokes…

That surprise (?) ‘In Association With A24’ in the end-credits tasted metallic.

Ironically ‘White Noise’ is the movie I wanted ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ to be. A film about how life’s banality distracts us from the joy of existing whilst truly confronting the depression and melancholy associated with carrying death’s inevitability… and yet… it’s just not very good is it.

Whilst the book uses time and detail to its advantage; the film adaptation feels like three short films about…

    Decent Flick.

Can’t help but feel that this is the exact kind of film that the 4dx experience is designed for. Feels hollow with a stationary chair.

I think what makes Ostlund movies work is his apparent lack of self righteousness. It would be easy to dismiss his satires as such and question if he is part of the problems he’s lampooning or part of the solutions. But…

    Decision to Leave

    ★★★½

An erotic thriller about forbidden desire, repressed feelings and the overwhelming nature of love that leaves you shattered.

And yet it has the sexual tension of an empty room.

A much stronger screenplay and story than it is a piece of directing and an execution of its genre.
