Simple story expertly done by Malle of harrowing times during the occupation of France. Good is undone by evil in the end, but it's remarkable to witness in this re-telling of actual events by Malle how cruel at least youth can be to each other. Unlike in The 400 Blows in which the meanspiritedness is uncomfortably amusing, here it's shockingly brutal. Deeply affecting denouement, perhaps Malle's most accomplished film.
