Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ★★★★½

Repeat viewings reveal two things: the first 25 minutes are a wan warm-over of trying to top the idol sequence from Raiders coupled with a vain attempt to kickstart the rest of the movie in Venice, and that the film finally begins to take off when Sean Connery shows up. That’s when it becomes fun and funny. This makes for the most amusing scenes in the whole series. It still misses the èlan of Raiders however. Julian Glover was a poor casting choice as the villains Donovan, and he makes you pine for the self-assured dash of Paul Freeman. Allison Doody measures up as the femme fatale.
