    Brief moments of joy looking back on such a fantastic film quickly make way for what is actually quite a tragic story. A damning indictment of life in the favelas, and a fascinating, eye-opening documentary.

    A fascinating and truly sickening story. You have to appreciate the openness and the level of detail the documentary goes into. I never like the whole dramatisation and recreation of events though, which really cheapens this film.

    Kudos to Spike Lee for bringing this unbelievable story to life with a masterful injection of humour and a big ol’ slap in the face to remind us all that this shit is still happening today. Things get heavy at times, of course, but the top-drawer performances of John David Washington and Adam Driver deliver on either end of the spectrum, nailing both tension and comedy and making this simultaneously entertaining and eye-opening.

    I’m trying really hard not to be swayed by the absolutely stunning soundtrack here, and objectively consider all aspects of this film. But it’s sooooo hard when the songs are this beautiful! I was really impressed with Bradley Cooper’s work here, both in front of and behind the camera, in particular the way he frames Gaga, how he utilises her commanding presence, and indeed, his best acting here comes from a deep-rooted, genuine respect and admiration for the woman opposite…
