• Mad God

    Mad God

Totally incoherent plotwise, at least on a first viewing, but I adored how grimy the world was. It's completely caked in blood, shit, and a wide range of viscera and it all looks fucking gorgeous. The body horror is immaculate, the animation is impeccable. Self-indulgent to be sure but in the best way imaginable.

  • Top Gun: Maverick

    Top Gun: Maverick

Genuinely not trying to be a contrarian here but I just for the life of me don't understand the things I've read about this movie now that I've seen it. You have to hand it to Cruise and his devotion both to the theater and doing stunts practically--all the actual flight scenes look great. But I dunno, I was never excited by anything. Cruise is a fine enough actor but he's never struck me as a particularly charismatic star and…

  • Swamp Thing

    Swamp Thing

Really wanted to like this but it runs out of steam after the first act, a few good moments aside it gets super repetitive and never has the amount of tension I would have expected/hoped for out of Craven.

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Easily the best one of these since Iron Man 3, and generally makes me less forgiving of good directors making bad MCU movies. Clearly it's possible to make one of these that actually feels like it has the stamp of artists on it, and isn't just another corporate product. I won't pretend this is anywhere near Raimi's best work, but there's a lot of him in it including a surprisingly gleeful mean streak.

Also: Elizabeth Olson plays the villain *fantastically.*…

  • CODA

When I started seeing people go negative on this movie I was sure it was typical Oscar-season frenzy--people piecing together what was on course to win and overstating their dislike of it. Wouldn't be the first time. Also wouldn't be the first time I thought a widely hated Oscar bait picture was unimpressive but ultimately fine.

I'm sad to report nothing I read properly captured just how bad Coda is. It really feels, to me, like the epitome of a…

Found this super annoying but I'm sure it'll land for the children it's intended for.

May be one of the best movies ever made

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

    These movies are fucking horrible

  • Mayor Pete

    Mayor Pete

One of those amazing documentaries I'm genuinely shocked saw the light of day. Hilarious almost start to finish watching them try to cast Pete as even remotely human and totally failing. Just a great time if you like watching movies about couples who fucking hate each other.

  • Dune

Kinda lulled me in with some good performances and gorgeous sets and cinematography but Dune is a mess. The first hour is all over the place in terms of pacing and never really does a great job establishing the stakes. The tension it tries to build never really coalesces, and the big turning point has little impact. There's a decent amount here to like but it's not enough to sustain the two and a half hour run time, and I couldn't help but feel like a lot of the ideas were half-baked, though I've never read the novel so can't really speak to that.
