The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse ★★★½

This was well-crafted torture. So tactile and immersive and mythological.

In No Exit, hell is other people. In this story, hell is the projection of your own psyche onto another person...and discovering maybe they weren't even there.

Dafoe's language skills are on point. There is no faking that skillset and this script relied heavily on him sticking the landing of some very long fucking phrases. Props.

The seagull had it coming. (Or maybe the film just got to me. I can't tell.)

The "lighthouse consummation" provided a blown-out image of Pattison's mouth and throat that seemed to morph (or wanted to morph) into some kind of sea creature opening. I'm not sure if there was a visual effect, or I just imagined a transformation. The skipped frames and high-pressured soundscape made me expect tentacles to explode out of his face.

That final image tho.
