Worth my Sunday afternoon for many reasons but first and foremost because that doodoodoo dee doo doo doodoodoo dee doo doo on the score is 🔥

It might be clowning on art world people but I think to call it a social satire or whatever is missing the forest a little bit. Feels more like a relational aesthetics sketch comedy act, relocating art from material objects into interactions. Of course, because this is theory and theory is pretentious, the concept of The…

Psychic remains inhabiting memory, mapped to space and place. Amalric achieves a gorgeous and affecting kind of subjective cinema; gesture and gaze pierce and shred linear temporality in favor of moments more heavily perspectival, perhaps counterfactual?

Krieps is phenomenal as expected but the edit is what really sang to me here.

Masterclass in perspective, both in script and shot. It’s like shot reverse shot but for chapters, at times you very literally get the reverse shot with the accompanying reverse perspective up to a full hour after a moment first transpires.

Just a few specific scattered things because I’m late to the party.

On Gordy: he’s an animal used as a prop for the Hollywood machine for entertainment by people who are not animal wranglers, or who at least lack the expertise to know you shouldn’t let balloons pop near him. Baby Jupe is in a kindred position— he’s a minority and a child actor being propped up for profit, perhaps this is why Gordy is willing to fist bump him.…

“So, you listen to me. Listen to me!
Television is not the truth. Television's a goddamn amusement park. Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, sideshow freaks, lion tamers, and football players. We're in the boredom-killing business.”

Really really cool stuff here. You’ve the power of canonical-cross-cutting , the time machine rig stand-in for a camera, the car chase like an action sequence directed by Val Kilmer and Adam Goldberg and shot by Denzel Washington. Also clean af on the direction and the script AND score, Tony Scott gives you so much with so little. It’s his movie-movie!

I wonder if, as a premier action director of the practical fx era, Tony Scott was keenly aware of…
