Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

“A badge is scarier than a gun”

Alright, full review as I try to summarize my thoughts. This is one of the most energetically powerful films I’ve seen in awhile. Shaka King does an incredible job with the screenplay and direction, and the lead performances of Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield continue to prove why they should be two of the biggest stars in Hollywood. There are some absolutely brutal moments that are difficult to watch, but it all feels necessary. At first, I wasn’t a fan of the framing device, but as soon as the film reached its conclusion, it tied in perfectly (and it honestly shocked me a little how much Stanfield looked like O’Neal). There’s really nothing else to pick apart with it; easy to see why it was named one of the ten best films of the year.
