Joseph Evans’s review published on Letterboxd:
this was the only feature film of Paul Thomas Anderson’s I hadn’t seen and I figured the man’s birthday was as good an occasion as any to finally get around to seeing it. And holy SHIT I really saved the best for last, huh??
this film fires on every possible cylinder. from the soundtrack to the ensemble cast to PTA directing the absolute shit out of every frame- from the very opening shot, the film overflows with crackling energy, addictive and seductive and vibrant, shining brighter and brighter until it burns out and comes crashing down into the depths of despair with so high a velocity that the characters are hurled right through rock bottom and out the other side, constructing a brutal cycle of sleaze and moral decay that the characters perhaps never escape.
Rollergirl. that’s it, that’s all I have left to say.
