competent enough, I guess. excellent at examining the damage of indoctrination and how extremely difficult it is to break out of it. jamie bell is pretty good. it’s pretty hard to be invested or feel empathy when you can’t help but feel this person deserves almost everything that happens to him. however, the film does a fair enough job at demonstrating the hard truth that for many of these people, this is how they are raised from birth. in this way, it’s good at cultivating empathy for those trying to change themselves and purge themselves of hate.

    Love Streams

love as a “continuous stream,” as an undercurrent guiding all, as an ever-present force lurking under every mistake, shortcoming, and hurt. if it IS a continuous stream, too often we build our dams to quell its flow- this film examines the cost, the worth; ponders how and if it’s possible to break down these barriers- to let the stream loose and glide along in its current. Cassavetes and Rowlands are electric. script is superb. will absolutely be diving into more of Cassavetes’ work very soon.

    Pierrot le Fou

ennui! romance! adventure! hitmen! politics! random fourth wall breaking and deconstruction of narrative convention! music! poetry! life! just go with it! pure and boisterously creative cinema. in our attempts to free ourselves from society’s cages, to live- via creating, running away, loving- we find ourselves trapped yet again in new ones of our own making. so what’s the solution? who fucking knows? all I know is this is kino

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

a romance of small, fleeting gestures, knowing glances, feelings of incendiary discovery, that builds with each touch, look, gesture, shot, and line of dialogue to create a romantic tension so palpable it felt as if my entire body was aflame. heart-stopping, astounding, transcendent.

“I know, Johnny. I know you want me so bad it’s like acid in your mouth.”

homoerotic action thriller with surfing, skydiving, and beach bro Patrick Swayze is the perfect niche of film I never knew I needed so badly.

  • There Will Be Blood

    There Will Be Blood

watched it with my father who hadn’t seen it. normally he and the rest of my family have pretty awful taste, but within the first few minutes when Jonny Greenwood’s unsettling score kicked in he was like “well this has me interested.” anyway he stayed riveted, even checking if *I* had fallen asleep when normally it’s the opposite, and he ended up loving it. that’s the power of a great film, folks. :)

can’t think of a single line of dialogue in any other film I’ve seen that has put me so immediately on edge like “not many people have basements in California.”
