competent enough, I guess. excellent at examining the damage of indoctrination and how extremely difficult it is to break out of it. jamie bell is pretty good. it’s pretty hard to be invested or feel empathy when you can’t help but feel this person deserves almost everything that happens to him. however, the film does a fair enough job at demonstrating the hard truth that for many of these people, this is how they are raised from birth. in this way, it’s good at cultivating empathy for those trying to change themselves and purge themselves of hate.

a lot I liked, more that I hated. gets at some pretty interesting ideas about male entitlement in modern relationships but Webb lacks the prowess to really examine them in any meaningful way. can we all just admit that Joseph Gordon-Leavitt has only ever been good in Brick?

I was given this movie to watch for my podcast and it’s my first time watching. it’s really not good but it eventually vroom vroomed its way into my heart. charmingly preposterous. so gloriously gaudy and trashy that it circles back around into its own vulgar kind of art.

also “we have truckers arming themselves for some good old-fashioned vigilante mayhem” is genuinely one of the funniest lines I have heard in my entire life, followed closely by “what is he, sandwich crazy?”

Dan Gilroy reuniting with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo? A cast including, again, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, Toni Colette, John Malkovich, and Daveed Diggs? A film where we get to see Jake Gyllenhaal naked/shirtless not once, not twice, but three times? And as a neurotic bisexual art critic? How! Was! This! Not! Better!!
