It's too bad that this is "canon" and some people seeing it for the first time are doing so from the context of checking it off a to-do list to be culturally literate. Just imagine stumbling onto it by accident on late night TV and thinking, "What the f*** is this?"
Kinda crazy that the first few times I saw 2001 it was pan & scan.
