Australian based filmmaker and cinema lover.
This film is unable to be what it is trying to be, whatever that is. A bit artsy, mythical, out of the box, but does a weak job of it all. Trying to break typically story making unsuccessfully, and yet it uses the Hero's Journey formula, amateurishly. It honestly felt like an expensive student film who got a bunch of money and spent it on the first draft of the first script he/she ever wrote.
First half is almost unbearable with Peter's friends and family taking larger roles than previous films, they just don't cut it. The comedy misses it's mark and the emotional scenes have no impact. The only good supporting character in first half is Dr. Strange. But, the second half does redeem the film somewhat. This is probably one of the weakest in the franchise.
Finally good to see a master filmmaker back in the cinemas. Old is a well made, well paced, film that keeps you engaged with strange phenomena events that warp what we know as reality. There's a great balance of mystery, comedy, drama and horror. Plus, the camera work is fantastic, I really liked the awkward angles and the abnormal camera movement. Also, the line-up of movie trailers coming soon looked great, looks like a new era of good films coming after the horrible draught of the last couple years.
This film is genius at work! The filmmakers have complete control over the viewer in ways that is almost impossible to do. Hopkins nailed the role of a deteriorating man with Dementia who is rightfully paranoid of what's happening around him, and we as an audience are right along with him questioning what the hell is going on. The cast and crew should be very proud of this film that will last through the ages. If I could give it 6 stars I would.
