The Father 2020
The brilliance of The Father is using dimentia as a device to create suspense. I was not expecting that going in. It is as sad as you might think it is, but it's not a tear-jerker. The element of suspense, and the fine performances from Hopkins and Coleman elevate this beyond a typical hanky-stainer. Recommended.

All In: The Fight for Democracy 2020
This felt like school, minus the A/V cart and the squeaky wheels. Still, you'll probably learn something you didn't know, and Stacy Abrams has my vote for president should she run. It's a solid documentary, no more, no less.

A sizzling, modern modern take on a 1970s revenge film, Promising Young Woman might be my favorite film of 2020. Give Carey Mulligan all the awards for this. The premise is easy to understand, but the story is hard to predict, regardless of himanybaimilar thrillers you've seen. Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar 2021
I want to go to Vista Del Mar! Or anyplace warm right now! This was way better than it had any business being. While cringey at times, this was reliable goofy gags one after another, and combined with beautiful locations made for one of the most surprising comedies in a long time. And Jamie Dornan was good!
