Joe Praska’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dolemite Is My Name takes viewers through a roller coaster of emotions with Eddie Murphy as our guide. On the whole, it's a generally silly movie with some legitimately hilarious scenes, but it manages to craftily sneak it some really poignantly inspiring and even tear-jerking moments along the way. Eddie Murphy is simply brilliant as Rudy Ray Moore, but truthfully the whole cast rocks it.
Comparisons to the The Disaster Artist are somewhat apt, but I found Dolemite Is My Name to be the more endearing and likable of the two. Both films detail the making of what could arguably be called bad movies that have had lasting cultural impacts, however this one explores some different themes alongside that - particularly the value of taking chances and betting on oneself when nobody else will - that really made it fun to watch.
