Extremely enjoyable spy thriller. Billy Nighy is the very charming MI5 intelligence analyst seemingly caught out by a ruthless establishment. Michael Gambon is entertainingly eccentric and delivers some good one liners. Ralph Fiennes is convincingly menacing/borderline insane as the PM. Look forward to watching the other two films in the series.

With Frank Field’s quip in mind I half expected to see Gordon Brown in the attic. Joking apart though, I think this is about as good an adaptation as you could hope for. It looks terrific, is full of energy, and the casting is admirable. Hard not to feel smitten by Mia Wasikowska in the lead and Michael Fassbender is suitably mournful and dangerous.

Once you’ve seen this there’s a pressure to knowingly say what a great film it is. But actually it’s rather dull with a novelty ending. I think you need to sit through it, tick it off the list and then watch something you enjoy.
