    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

    ★★★★

E.T. was just on TV.. Christmas can start now.. Kuwahara BMX’s and heather grey hoodies weren’t in abundance in UK 82’.. A single chase sequence changed all that.

Havn’t seen this since it was new. Feels little less vital than it did in the late 90s. But it means well through its kaleidoscope of MTV and Cable channel idolisation. Still a strong use of Only Thing I Can Never Have by NIN. It’s the big getting shit off your chest, cathartic 2 hr bucket of blood party after Stone got bogged down in Vietnam trilogies and sprawling biopics.
You can see some clear call and response.. From Lynch’s Wild at Heart and Fire Walk with Me and with Stones’ NBK.. Lynch going on to do Lost Highway.. Enjoyed this mess.

Post Apocalyptic Silent Running. Had the good cry. Too good to be stuck on a half dead streaming service.

This is my 2nd viewing. It looks beautiful. Every visual approach evokes 70s Sci Fi book covers, and it works extremely well. Actually reminded and provoked the US cover of Heretics of Dune. Strange oval shaped building / shrine / spacecraft. Dragonfly Ornithopter solution, they even sound like desert battered chinooks? Caladanian Ancestral Tombs. That eye roll back for Mentat’s duel operating system. Pieter’s abomination? The emotionally stunted quality to the Harkonnen’s. The…

Late 1980’s: Sitting in the cinema with a mate. Someones dad across the way snorting with laughter and choking on his giant cinema drink at the sight of a Madmartigan Snowball coming towards the cinema screen.

Early 2000’s: Six hours of Lord of the Rings movies in a darkened room… Audience in total fkn silence… the films had ‘witty humor’ in them.

Just had safe guarding training at the end of work today. Then find out this is… about this. Don’t think I’ll mention about it in work. Let that slide. Sitting there laughing to myself at how fkd up this be. Trying to sleep at 1am!

….You know… when your brought up a movie and you love that movie, and then you watch it in highest quality, everything’s cooking for the first time.

    It’s a new thrill again.

  • Conan the Barbarian

He is Conan, Cimmerian. He will not cry, so I cry for him. - Subotai

Conan is one of those films* from my childhood that a kid who had managed to see a 18 rental, would spend 20mins on a coach trip, eagerly explaining the opening story of cruelty that leads to a adult Conan. (Schwarzenegger). That wheel of punishment sounded mental to me. It’s still an astonishing thing.

*Robocop and Alien were the other two films that had their opening hooks explained to a wide eyed younger me.

Astonishingly shot on the front. Specially when the 701st go over the top to take the ant hill. But this is efficient Kubrick, story told in 90mins.. there’s no drawn out scenes that we would see by the end of the 60s.

Corporal Paris : See that cockroach? Tomorrow morning, we'll be dead, and it'll be alive. It'll have more contact with my wife and child than I will. I'll be nothing, and it'll be alive.

Very much the post 9:11 creature. That morbid curiosity in the street, too late to run and hide.
