‘ℂ𝕒𝕨! ℂ𝕒𝕨! 𝔹𝕒𝕟𝕘! 𝔽𝕦𝕔𝕜, 𝕀'𝕞 𝕕𝕖𝕒𝕕!‘

Easy to forget how huge this was 1994. Still
remember the bus stop bill posters. I’ve wanted to watch it since coming out of The Batman months ago. Because it takes a surface aesthetic.. the grime.. the downpour. But not a zeitgeist. In 2022 this feels even more realised than I remember it being. Not just a series of music video showcasing it’s soundtrack. It’s tight, dialogue is fresher than I remember it being. Just…

That lack of confidence in SM back stage at the Brixton gig says so much about their breaking up during Terror Twilight now.

There was a moment halfway through this I found myself going. ‘Please, Terry don’t tear this down. I need these people to be OK’ ...From the beginning with BRAZIL, I’ve been like this.

I settled into this movie a bit more this time around. Laughed a lot more. Noticed it’s the same skyscraper location from Gremlins 2. I stayed at a small Hotel 1 min up the road. Used the ATM at the base of it.

Greatest opening 10mins I’ve ever seen from a first time director. No other Mad Max film comes close to it as opening statement of intent.

Been meaning to sit down with this for a while. Thought Easter weekend would be a good time to rattle through em.’

I’ve always been of the thinking that the slightly uneven sequels tend to hang off this perfect mid 80s gem. That panning camera opening to the platrum, that puts you in these huge, cosy, lived in suburban garage spaces. Beautiful world building in both Hill Valley town squares. Almost stagey musical in feel. Near perfect pacing and casting. The film…

    Westworld

The first time Crichton did a amusement park that starts to eat the guests. Use to get broadcast a-lot around 1993’. Astonishing Fred Karlin soundtrack jumping from synth ambient to ersatz western dread... specially in the subterranean complex... the pursuit filled me with so much fear on its debut. Think watched it too much in my teens. Dissected it. Brynner performance is subtle.. astonish.. self performance art. James Cameron took notes. Made his own urban version in 1984. Think he…

    28 Days Later

Danny Boyle set fire to his home town. When they where doing promotion for the film in Manchester in 2002. You’d find 28 Days Later matchbooks in bars. I inherited a packet from a mate. Sits in the DVD case.
