John Ruhl’s review published on Letterboxd:
[Extended 171 Minute Director’s Cut]
The golden question: Is it worth buying a ticket for the extended cut if you’ve already seen the original?
Absolutely it is.
A lot of the added scenes, the majority of which are extended versions of scenes that were already featured in the original cut, add more character development to the relationships between the characters. The subplot involving Christian & Josh’s academic rivalry is given new room to breathe and is fleshed out even more with the extra running time of 171 minutes. As is the breakdown of Christian & Dani’s disintegrating relationship, which includes a scene between them arguing that adds enough new dimensions that it makes this cut even superior to the original cut.
The longest, and probably most noteworthy, of any of the added sequences is another hellish cult ritual that ratchets up the dread and paranoia even more than the original cut.
Still the best film of the year so far, and one of the few director’s cuts that improves and expands on the original.
