    Vox Lux

I hated this film. It's the equivalent of those pretentious modern art pieces that are deliberately bad and defy you to suggest that they're not art. Like Piss Christ. Like, "Hey, look how irreverent I'm being with my edgy, transgressive art." Such is Vox Lux.

Story: incoherent, goes nowhere, says nothing.
    Casting: confusing. Not clever.
    Tone: wildly inconsistent.
Characters: unlikeable and, even worse, boring.

Editing: The worst. Each scene dragged into infinity. The 20 minute concert at the end was…

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

    ★½

Incomprehensible. Too many storylines and characters to follow. Unclear stakes. A final showdown of red and blue clouds fighting? And so much stilly magic jargon.

I miss MoviePass. Can't take risks like this any more.

A Ghost Story is visual poetry - at its best when saying the least and vice-versa. Like any poem, it requires effort to decode - effort most people are unable or unwilling to expend. I would recommend it only to those able to appreciate slow(!) poetic films…

    Disobedience

    ★★★½

Saw this with four friends at a packed theater in Manhattan. My girlfriend and I liked it and our three friends hated it, mainly because the pacing.

It is slow. Fair enough. The director takes his time dolling out information so the setup is unclear at first but it's worth it to slug through just because the third act is fantastic. I was really impressed and moved by the synagogue scene and especially the lovely moment after with Esti and…
