    Blown away, again!!

I hadn’t watched this in a while so it was time for a re-watch. There’s so much to theorise, but first let me point out the different ways this works for me.

It’s a typical heist movie with a target (Fischer), assembly of a team, planning of the heist, the heist starts but things go wrong (Fischer’s militarised subconscious, Mal), so they need to improvise (down to limbo). There’s also the cliched of “one last job” to…

The real villain is the mayor, he did evil things for his own gain. The shark was just hungry.

For some reason I never watched Jaws in my youth, I honestly don’t know why. I remedied that in the late 90s, but that was my only viewing ever since. While I remember liking it a lot, I didn’t actually remember anything about the movie itself. I knew the popular references and stories about it (the soundtrack obviously, the scars scene,…

    Sergio Leone Marathon #8/8

Watching all Leone films in a row made me understand what type of film he was interested in. He started with low budget films obviously, but he clearly was interested in epic stories that take their time in telling the story, using cinematic techniques instead of simple dialogs between characters. You can trace this trend towards more epic stories by charting the runtime of his films:

    - We start from the lean A Fistful of Dollars

The first half of this doc is basically a summary of the much better documentary The Rocky Saga: Going the Distance. It uses the same interview clips (except for Stallone, who basically says the same things) with a new voiceover from Michael B. Jordan.

Then in the second half it focuses in Creed, with new interviews from Stallone, Jordan and director Ryan Coogler. This part is interesting, but i was very annoyed by the repetition and summary in the first half. I’d say watch the other doc first, then come back and watch only the second half of this doc.

Part of my Akira Kurosawa Marathon

    Personal History
This was my first Kurosawa film and it obviously blew me away. I was intimidated by the long run time, but I couldn’t believe how quickly it flew by. After that first watch (on a poor quality DVD) I bought the Criterion DVD, and poured over all the extras. For this revisit I started watching at around 10pm, I only planned to watch 1-2 hours and finish the next day, since I…

    Sergio Leone Marathon #4/8

This third and final installment of the Dollars Trilogy is the most well known and praised. Everything about it is iconic and seeped into the pop culture. My son has never heard of this film, or Leone or spaghetti western. But he’s heard the main theme by Ennio Morricone. Who hasn’t? That theme works even better with the returning animated titles, at least it feels right to my eyes and ears. Those flutes and ocarinas mimicking…
