The Souvenir ★★★½

I don’t think I ever fully got on board with The Souvenir’s idiosyncratic style and pace, and I find its visual aesthetic rather unappealing. However, the film’s deeply personal and intimate look at the contradictions of unhealthy, but intermittently tender and loving, relationships and how they simultaneously define and distort an individual’s sense of self is absolutely fascinating, mapping out the highs and lows of its central relationship in seemingly disconnected little moments that are more reminiscent of flashes of memories than a traditional Hollywood structure.
