    The Little Mermaid

    The Little Mermaid 🧜‍♀️ was always a childhood favourite of mine. Therefore felt natural to introduce it to my 2 and 3 year old sons. Then realised how dark it can get during their frantic screams 😱 at nightmarish Ursula 🐙. They loved the songs 🎶 though.

    I appreciated this so much more on my Monsterverse rewatch. The cinematography by Edwards is fantastic and the score adds so much to each scene. I love the point of view it takes aswell, shooting it at the eye levels of the human characters. So we witness the destruction from their perspective. It really adds to the tension. Sure Godzilla could have been shown more or earlier, but when they did his reveal it really did create a dramatic entrance. Sometimes less is more. The undeniable best scene of the movie remains the Halo jump, simply perfect.

    Garland has scripted some truly great films with Sunshine, 28 days later and Dredd to name but three. This being his first foray at directing, he creates a near faultless film. Based on studies of true AI and the implications of human behaviour. His three leads are all great, with Vikander putting in an especially great controlled performance as Ava.
