Incredibly brave people, incredible story, there’s no doubt.

In terms of documentary film making I feel like it forced emotions a bit too much.
Thus my thoughts on the music: effective, I guess, but also blunt and generic. Music in film almost always tries to trigger your emotions in some way and I have nothing against that. But I think one must be very careful not to do too much in terms of music when working on documentaries compared to fiction.

Then again it is literally a thriller so it makes some kind of sense to go all in and just do a thriller score.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

    ★★★★

    Brief thoughts on the score:
Well, Jonny Greenwood. Weird and effective as always. Love the Ondes Martenot. And also the steel-strung harp, interesting, almost dulcimer-like sound.
The radio-transmitting thing is also an interesting idea, love it.

Jonny Greenwood on why there isn't a score release for this film: "It wasn't long enough. There were a few pretty steel-strung harp things but the rest of it was mostly laptop-generated stuff broadcast to, and recorded from an old LW radio... It's good in the film but not exactly Raiders Of The Lost Ark on its own."

    Brief thoughts on the score:
Honestly I would’ve expected more from the score. Michael Giacchino has written such great music! This one feels a bit like well crafted but uninventive.
I liked that the two main themes, the Batman theme and the Riddler theme, are derived directly from their respective songs. The two chords of the Batman motif (i - bIV) are the same as the first two chords of the Nirvana song (at least the same scale degree, sometimes…

    Billy Elliot

    ★★★★½

    Brief thoughts on the score:
I liked how Billy’s piano playing was layered on top of the score. Also how Billy’s father gargled in tune and in time to the score. Loved to hear A Child is Born by Thad Jones. Overall a solid score.

Most tragic moment when the piano gets destroyed and burnt key by key.
