Daniel: You're the best friend I've ever had.
Miyagi: You... pretty okay, too.
Holds up way better as a buddy-comedy with sweet coming-of-age undertones rather than a beat-the-bullies Rocky-lite. Pat Morita makes this film tick whilst Ralph Macchio runs like clockwork as the fish out of water in a new town with his back against the wall. The soundtrack is as corny as it comes, the screenplay equally so, but there is undeniable euphoria in the climactic fight and THAT finishing maneouvre, the almighty Crane Kick! The film’s about as culturally rich as a Chinese takeaway, but in fairness it is also just as easy going and pleasing to the palette, even if it does leave you bloated through its needless but to be expected excesses.
