SPL: Kill Zone

SPL: Kill Zone

Commits to the melodrama a little too eagerly for my taste (the Father's Day stuff is pretty mawkish, let's be real) but it's better to transparently give us reasons to sympathize with your characters than not. I guess? Anyways, this is an efficient actioner with superb fight sequences. I knew Sammo Hung was a legend but I had no idea he was not to be fucked with even at the ripe old age of 53. And Donnie Yen, looking like the HK answer to The Situation, is an exceptionally magnetic performer. His visceral showdowns opposite Wu Jing and Hung are so incredibly satisfying that I have to ponder yet again why Hollywood doesn't try to duplicate what we see here. I also always enjoy seeing the different rhythms and techniques that mainstream HK movies employ, like the weird 5-way split-screen shot. The use of wide shots shouldn't be that uncommon for Hollywood directors though. I would like to see who's punching who.
