I try to only watch movies I’ll like. Ratings span back to 2018
Police Story 1985
I could probably do that too, if I put my mind to it
Avatar: The Way of Water 2022
Only subtracting 1 star for the painfully-bland script because the action is so incredible, the visuals are so beautiful, the sense of natural wonder is so real, and the outrage & horror of colonial ecological destruction are so palpable that the flat and silly moments were drowned out for me. There’s no denying the quality of the craft — the CGI is the best I’ve ever seen, the 3D is completely absorbing, and both the exploration & the battle sequences are perfectly…
Blanchett really is so good and there are some nice images, but I agree with Richard Brody’s complaint that the movie’s ambiguity and nuance serve as veneers for its fundamentally-regressive perspective. The strongest emotion I felt while watching it was contempt, and not just for the film’s protagonist. But that wasn’t the only emotion I felt, and when the lead performance is this compelling, it’s hard to fully dislike it, even though I think it amounts to a well-constructed and strange series of hollow and ultimately-vapid provocations.
La Chinoise 1967
Deeply unfair that my uneven and embarrassing political development had to take place within the post-2016 US democratic socialist scene instead of a ‘60s French Maoist cell… I really was born in the wrong generation.
