Josh Barton’s review published on Letterboxd:
Nature just got gangster.
I didn't really know what to expect from Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople but what I got was a touching and often hilarious film that will have you crying with laughter one minute and then hitting you hard the next with its serious subject matter.
It's a wonderfully crafted film from Taika Waititi, perfectly combining quirky comedy, clever writing, solid performances and some glorious shots of the New Zealand bush to become one of the best films of the year.
I can't tell you enough how good the chemistry between Sam Neill and newcomer Julian Dennison is in this film. They make for one of the oddest couples in the history of film, Dennison really lighting up the screen throughout.
I'm so intrigued to see what Taika Waititi does with Thor: Ragnarok. If he gets full creative freedom, we could be in for something very different in the MCU, and that's not a bad thing at all.
