Josh Lempert’s review published on Letterboxd:
This movie further proves that Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the best filmmakers in the game right now.
With a stellar cast, great direction, and snappy writing, The Favourite stands as one of the best, most complete films of the year.
Olivia Colman is fantastic as the hysterical and volatile Queen Anne. Anne is such a complex character and Colman executes impressively.
Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone were both brilliant as always, but it’s truly their chemistry on screen (even in rivalry) that really sparks.
A good rivalry is one that you never want to end and this one definitely checks that box.
I felt like I could easily have watched another half hour of this movie, but nonetheless, the movie ends perfectly with an amazing sequence.
The Favourite is an appropriate title as this is probably my favorite Lanthamos movie I’ve seen.
It’s easily his most accessible and “normal” movie and I would strongly recommend it to people who have seen his other films as well as people who have never heard of him before.
