There's no beating around the bush: this is stylish pulp cinema and not too much more. But, somehow, it's just so satisfying. The obvious highlights are its well-curated soundtrack (darkwave and electro are my weakness, so I may be holding bias towards this film in its favour), competent cinematography, and tone (I personally felt a vague reminiscence of Season of the Witch's mood, although it could simply be the Halloween setup).

Overall: not exactly artisanal, but not dull. It's a fun ride.

While I will politely disagree, I can completely understand why many may put this film off as frustrating or simply hold it with extreme bias. This is easily Refn's boldest and most unusual entry; with heavy symbolism and subtext, minimal dialogue, and a morally off-kilter cast, Only God Forgives appears as a sort of neon-soaked, metropolitan nightmare that does not dare explain itself. I was among those who were genuinely mesmerised by its eerie qualities; and if that's wrong, then I truly don't want to be right.

With a plot that is emulated and even parodied time and time again, House most certainly solidifies the traditional horror form, filled with atmosphere, tension, and intrigue; and of course, no matter what, Price always manages to wrap around an eerily quirky character with ease. With only a 75-minute running time, this is a rather short and sweet entry.
