Jannis’s review published on Letterboxd:
City of God was on my watchlist for a long time and many people recomended it to me, but somehow I just didn't watch it.
Why? It is so incredibly good!
The portrayal of the life in Rio de Janeiro's Favelas is shocking and disturbing, the Gang wars are brutal and the romance is heartbreaking. City of God manages to put such a high amount of genres, emotion and story in these 2 hours of pure Kino, it's truly impressive.
I'm sitting here in Germany, on the other side of the world and Mereilles brings the way of life in the City of God, the unscrupulous and unromantic, but normal life of these citizen in a nearly documentary style in my living room.
City of God is shocking, fascinating, living and human. Incredible.
