Jasim Perales’s review published on Letterboxd:
WELL, THAT CERTAINLY WAS A MOVIE!
Not gonna lie, I hated pretty much every aspect of this, from the lifeless and bland color palette and CGI, to the atrociously phoned-in voice performances, to the extremely thin story that starts and stops as it pleases, to the complete lack of commitment to the source material and the magic it captures.
The musical numbers were extremely lame and devoid of any life, charisma, personality, or flair, and honestly, the singing itself really isn’t all that special. It did not need to be a musical like the original, nor did it need to be 2 hours long(...?).
It’s a boring ride, but Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, and John Oliver are okay at times...? I don’t know, it’s really not a good movie, even with the few laughs and energy provided by these guys.
